As per the National Vital Statastics Report by the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) approximately 1.3 per 100,000 people in the United States, died of burns (fire or flame injury) in 2003.Though death due to burn is observed more often in third degree burns, fire or flame injury needs to be considered seriously. Fortunately, Minor burns and first degree burns can easily be handled at home. Here are some simple first aid precautions and prompt application of specific home remedies prevent aggravations of symptoms associated with burns.


Classification of Burns
  1. First degree burns: First degree burns are those in which only the outer layer of skin is burned. The skin gets red, and pain and swelling are sometimes present.
  2. Second degree burn: Second degree burns occur when the skin’s outer layer is burnt, along with the dermis. The skin becomes extremely red and blisters form. There occurs swelling and severe pain.
  3. Third degree burn: Third degree burns involve all the layers of the skin and cause lasting tissue damage. Muscle, fat and bone may be adversely affected. The area may be charred or could show as dry and white.

Honey Treats Minor Burns
Here are some home remedies that have been found to be highly effective in treating minor burns at home.
  • Aloe: Aloe Vera is the first home remedy that one thinks of to tackle first degree burns. Apply generous amounts of aloe Vera over the burned area. Aloe Vera is soothing; it decreases inflammation and pain, and affords instant relief, particularly in cases of minor burns. It allays burning almost immediately.
  • Honey: Topical application of honey has been used time and again to treat burns successfully. It is a very powerful anti bacterial and prevents the occurrence of secondary infections. It also prevents blistering, excessive swelling and promotes rapid healing of the tissues and the skin.

  • Potato: Potatoes are equally effectual in the management of burns. Sliced potatoes when applied over the affected area exert prompt relief. Potatoes soothe the skin, reduce burning and encourage quick healing without any scar formation. 
Immediate Treatment for Burns: First Aid for Burns



Minor burns heal without much treatment. You must look out for: redness, swelling, increased pain, fever or oozing. These could be signs of infection. If an infection occurs, get medical help.
  1. Hold the area under cool running water for 10 - 15 minutes or cover with cold compresses. This reduces the pain and the swelling. Never apply ice, it causes further damage. Never apply butter or ointments.
  2. Cover the burn with a sterile gauze bandage. Do not use cotton; it gets in to the wound.
  3. For severe burns, do not get rid of the burned clothing. Nonetheless, ensure that the patient is not in contact with any smoldering material. Do not plunge 3rd degree burns in cold water.
  4. Elevate the body part that is burnt above the level of the heart. Cover burnt area with a sterile gauze.
